Kelee: When I started to work with the Browns, I asked Beka to select colors to represent her core beliefs and values. She would then use those colors throughout her sacred place to tell her “heart story.” The colorful heart-style the family of three created is told with stenciled-pillows, confetti tissue paper walls, an affirmation slipcover, a friendship-celebrating stained-glass window, and more. These creative projects can be easily personalized for your own use. I have used many of these projects in my own home – to stay real with myself. There is nothing more joyfui to the heart than being surrounded by one’s own True Colors. An autographed slipcover keeps good experiences and warm thoughts from close friends for years to come. Beka (standing, on right) and her friends Carrie and Katy have a blast as they personalize a slipcover made by Beka’s mom Cherie.
“For Rebeka Brown, or “Beka” as her friends call her, each color in her bedroom has a specific meaning. Faith is a deep, mysterious purple; the future a bright tangerine; friends are a stimulating twist of lime; family as important and blue as the night sky; love is the color of a valentine; and Beka herself identifies with the intensity of an Asian fuchsia blossom. As part of a large group of friends, Beka describes them as silver, like a precious metal: We support each other with uplifting advice and encouragement. Make photocopies of friends and others you love on transparency paper. Cut them out. Using a spray adhesive, fix them to Plexiglas squares. Use key chain to link the squares together.
